Menurut Johnny, pers sebagai pilar keempat demokrasi, setelah legislatif, eksekutif dan yudikatif, yang berfungsi sebagai pengontrol atas tiga pilar tersebut.
“Jadi Ibu Ketua Komisi I DPR RI (Meutya Viada Hafid), kita memang dikontrol oleh pers dan pers berjanji untuk mengontrol kita dan itu adalah hal yang baik adanya,” ujarnya.
Dalam perkembangannya, katanya, terjadi perubahan referensi sumber berita masyarakat, yang menggeser peran media televisi dan media cetak.
Hal itu didasarkan oleh Digital News Report 2021 yang dirilis Reuters Institute University of Oxford, yang menyebutkan media online termasuk media sosial, menjadi sumber berita yang paling banyak diakses oleh masyarakat dengan proporsi sekitar 89 persen. Sementara televisi, hanya mencapai 58 persen dan media cetak 20 persen.
“Laporan tersebut dinilai selaras juga dengan Survei Status Literasi Digital Indonesia 2021 yang dilakukan Kominfo dan Katadata Insight Center. Ada 73 persen masyarakat menjadikan media sosial sebagai sumber informasi yang paling sering diakses, sedangkan 59,7 persen responden memilih televisi dan hanya empat persen responden memilih media cetak dan radio sebagai sumber informasi”, paparnya.
Oleh karenanya, Johnny mendorong pers menyajikan konten yang bisa memberdayakan dan menjaga humanisme masyarakat.
Insan pers Indonesia, juga diharapkan menunjukkan berbagai karya yang berkualitas dalam menjalankan kebebasan pers, yang mampu menunjukkan perbedaan antara konten hasil kerja dan kinerja jurnalisme dengan konten yang bukan karya jurnalistik.
